Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

ShortCake

Ingredients

• 2 cups whole wheat flour
• 4 teaspoons Baking powder
• 3/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon sugar
• 4 tablespoons organic butter
• 3/4 cup half and half
• Melted butter to brush shortcakes

Directions

Heat oven 450 degrees.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Cut in butter. Mix in half-and-half. Drop by large spoonfuls onto a baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 15 minutes or until brown. Cool

Cut strawberriesup and place into a bowl. Sprinkle sugar over strawberries and refrigerate for a month.

Whipped Cream

Ingredients

• 1 cup heavy cream
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

Directions

1. In a large bowl, whip cream until stiff peaks are just about to form. Beat in vanilla and sugar until peaks form. Make sure not to over-beat, cream will then become lumpy and butter-like.

The Destruction of forests and the consequences that follow

Forests are one of the most important ecosystems on the face of the Earth. However, roughly 30% of the Earth's land is covered by forests that produce 20% of the earth's oxygen. Deforestation is an issue that is destroying the many forests on our planet. I argue that unless we can completely stop deforestation in tropical and monsoon environments, every old growth forest will be converted into farmlands. These abrupt changes will cause widespread destruction of ecosystems and a increase of CO2 levels.

Since the start of mass deforestation, over "45% of original tropical and monsoon forests have been cut down and the remaining trees are being cut down at an average rate of 1% per year or roughly 13,860,00 Hectares (2.471 acre)" (Global Ecology in Human Perspective Ch. 12, Charles H. Southwick). At this rate, all old growth rainforests will be converted into farmland by 2050. Once a old growth forest is gone, the steps towards an unstable environment begin to unfold. The area is turned into farmland; the biodiversity of the area is completely wiped out. The deep roots from the forests are gone and an increase in erosion and tropical diseases, such as "Malaria, Yellow fever, and trypanosomiasis."

The few first world countries like the USA, U.K., and Canada, have begun steps to reduce the effects of deforestation, but it's the many third world countries (Nigeria, Tanzania, Honduras) that are causing the most damage. The stronger nations must teach these nations about safer ways to increase their economy without destroying the environment at the same time.

Movie Reflection

This movie has shown me a whole different picture of fast food and the many problems with it. There are basically 3 crops and 2 types of animals that feed America; Wheat, Corn, Soy, Pork, and Beef. I was amazed to find out that almost every type of food in a supermarket has some type of Corn Bi-Product and after seeing how much we depend on corn has totally changed my views on America's food plan. America needs to find alternatives to corn so that we can reduce our dependability on just a single crop. For a while now, fast food has been a big part of my life and after seeing this movie, I have decided to eat less at fast food chains and more at local restaurants that use healthier ingredients and organic foods.

The biggest cause of deforestation is the conversion top cropland and pasture. Deforestation follows a chain effect starting with the production of roads to areas that were not accessible earlier. These roads allow loggers to clear areas. Once the loggers clear these areas, they move on and farmers and ranchers, slash and burn the remaining trees to make room for their crops. The FAO(Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN, is the most widely used tool for measuring global forest resources. From 1990-2005, Brazil has deforested over 42 million hectares(Size of CA) of forest. Brazil is followed by Indonesia, Sudan, Myanmar, and Congo. The country with the greatest amount of forest lost was Comoros, Which has destroyed almost 60% of all it's forests.

Scientists replicate a key process in photosynthesis

A group of scientists at Monash University have been able to replicate a key process in Photosynthesis.

They used a manganese cluster, which is a key part in a plants system to use H2O, CO2, and sunlight to create energy and Oxygen. By replacing the use of electricity with sunlight, they were able to create a power source that can create Hydrogen that can used as a green fuel.

A group of scientists at CSIRO's Telecommunications and Industrial Physics are developing artificial Photosynthesis that could one day be used to produce Energy, Oxygen. If these process could be replicated through nanotechnology, we could grow fields of these little artificial organisms. They “COULD” even replace trees.

Reflection:

Deforestation, is a huge threat to our forests and the biodiversity of our planet. Many of the tropical Rain forests are being destroyed for ranchers and farmers. With the increasing population of the Earth, we are gonna need a better source of food. If for some reason all the trees on our planet disappear, we will have to find an alternative source of Photosynthesis. Once we successfully create artificial photosynthesis, we will be able to reduce our impact on the climate while also creating a energy source and possibly a form of carbohydrates.

Once we learn how to replicate photosynthesis, we would also have to learn how to replicate nature's self-assembly process. Self-assembly builds from the bottom up, atom by atom, molecule by molecule, choosing the right components to drive the assembly of the final intricate and complex material, device, or system such as the eye or photosynthesis. By using Nanotechnology, we could possibly create this system by using common atoms or molecules to create artificial photosynthesis.

The Requirments to grow Hardy Kiwis

The Kiwi plant is a long term project. They are called perennial plants because if they are cared for in the right way, they can live longer then 2 years and up to 50 years. A Hardy Kiwis size is determined by the trellis/support structure that helps it grow. Kiwi's prefer full sun to light shade. they can grow to zone 5 on the hardiness scale. The flowering period is late May/Early June which works well for our garden and the school semester. The soil must be well-drained because Hardy Kiwi's are prone to a disease called Root Rot. You can use seeds but it is better to use cuttings and grafts to start your plants.

The first growing season for Kiwi's is the hardest. It is recommended that you plant them in a 5 gallon bucket with many holes on the bucket to keep the soil well-drained.

It is recommended to apply compost to the hole when planting the kiwi's to give them the nutrients they need. I must plant the Kiwis 4-5 feet apart because these vines they can grow crazy if they are not cared for and pruned correctly. I can use a fence as a trellis or I can make one myself. Once you plant the Kiwi, you prune back the stem 2 buds to encourage development. After they begin to grow, you choose the largest as your main body of the vine. Using wire or a stake, you train the main body to climb up the fence. Once the vine has reached the height, you prune off the growing tip and when shoots begin to form from, you use them for the main branches of the plant.

Reading Reflection

This reading was very interesting and it helped build my view of our impact on the world. After reading that paper, I have come to notice our major need for oil as a daily necessity. This fixation must be destroyed as fast as we can before we see the world fall apart around us. The reading points out many places in our current government that can be fixed to better help the health of our country and its citizens.

The first thing I think that the government should do is start caring out quality over quantity instead of the latter which is why many Americans are overweight. What caught my eye the most was the fact that if all U.S. citizens didn't eat meat 1 day of the week, then we would be the equivalent, in carbon saved, of taking 20 million mid size sedans off the road for a year. This just shows how much oil is used to produce the meat we depend so strongly on.

America has always been about industialization and made the population believe that farming and agriculture was a poor mans job. I agree with the author that the goverment should start doing the opposite, we need more farmers to create farms with more biodiversity then the farms we have today. Today's farms are made to produce as much of a certain product for super cheap prices. By using organic methods of farming and organic and natural pesticides, we can produce healthy crops and cattle.

Relatives in agriculture

Well during my research of my family, I found out that noone on my either parents side of the family were in agriculture. On my fathers side, everyone was either a businessman or a seamstress. On my mother's side, her father was a engineer and her mother was a teacher.

My Expectations from Enviromental Science

I am really looking forward to this semester in Enviromental science. I have always have had a passion for the earth and biology. I really hope to learn more about how we can interact with the enviroment and the creatures that live here. I also am looking forward to working on the garden and planting some cool fruits and veggies.

Magazine Reflection Take 2

1. Overall, when you think about the big picture of your writing, what improved? How did it get better? Why?

In many of my previous writing assignments, I would not start writing until Randy would ask for a third draft. I would quickly write my paper and hand it in with many errors and mistakes. But in this writing assignment, I proved to myself that creating drafts early and making revisions create a better looking essay. It also gave me more time to get some sleep and to work on other assignments.

2. Overall, when you think about the big picture of your writing, what still needs work? What do you think will help you improve? Why?

I believe that my picture taking ability is not what i would like it to be. I feel that I did not spend enough time on each picture to show what I was trying to accomplish. Next time, I will ask for some advice from other students who are better at taking pictures and have them critique the pictures.

3. Specifically, show us something that improved and describe the path it took to get better. You can quote your article, your drafts, link to evidence, etc.

In many of my paragraphs, my introductory sentence was bland and not interesting. But after help from students and Randy, I was able to revise the sentences and make them more interesting.

4. Describe something specific (or a few things!) that you learned about writing.
Writing is not something that just comes straight from your brain, you need critiques and revisions to create a better essay. A writer must be able to take adives from collegues and use it to form better paragraphs and sentences.

My Magazine Reflection

1. What went well for you during the process of creating this magazine?

I Was able to edit and revise my before the deadline so that I had more time to help others and revise some mistakes that i missed. This was one of the first projects that I feel I did my best.

2. What challenges did you face as you moved from an early draft or idea to a final product?
One of the challenges i faced was remembering to ask others to critique my article and then using that i information to make my article better. I feel that i was able to do this with this article and it helped a lot.

3. What other examples of work—student and professional—stood out as exemplary and served as a good model for your own work?
I looked at many articles from National Geographic as models that I would follow. National Geographic has many photo essays that I was able to use as examples. I also looked at other students who did a photo essay and took some ideas from them.

Internship Photo Essay (revised)

Luke Hatschbach's Internship Photoessay

Many sophomores and juniors have very high hopes that there internship will be fun and enjoyable. But for many, like me, there internship was nothing like they imagined. Although this internship was somewhat dull, I have learned a lot about the type of careers without going insane. Working with my hands is one of my greatest skills and being confined to a chair all day can make me feel like a wound up spring ready to explode any second.

For the past two weeks I have had the pleasure of driving 15 mph in traffic to my internship. On my first day of internship I gave myself an hour to get to my job and I arrived in about 30 minutes. Then I decided to leave a little later so that I could have some more time to eat and get ready; bu this time traffic was worst then the day before. By the end of the first week, I found out that if I leave 15 minutes earlier I do not hit any traffic on my way to my internship. I also had to remind myself to get gas the night before because one morning I forgot to get gas and I almost ran out getting to the gas station. Overall, I enjoyed driving in traffic I was able to relax and listen to some music before my internship.

After about the third day, I decided that I am not the type of person that can work in an office and that I cannot be doing the same thing day after day. I need to have a very interesting career or something that is different each day to keep me absorbed in the project.

My mentor Rochelle Kline-Casey is very nice; she has helped me so much while I was creating my script for executing tests. At some times I had no idea what I was doing. The other employees were also very helpful and each day at 3, we would have a meeting with the programmers in Boulder, CO about errors we have found in the program that we are testing.

I had my own desk and computer that I used to test different programs. Each employee had there own room or desk and no one had to share a room with another employee. Evan though all the rooms had doors, many of the employees kept them open to welcome others in to talk or to ask questions. Evan and I were working on the same program so that when we had a question we would often come to each other for the answer.

One of the coolest things of working at Qualcomm was the free drinks and Hot Chocolate. One of the first things I do in the morning is go and get a hot chocolate. It warms me up and energizes me for the rest of the day. The Vending machines do not always have the same kind of soda in them after a few walks around the building I was able to find out where I could get Dr Pepper and Mountain Dew. The Mountain Dew was a hard soda to find; I actually found it when I was in a meeting looking in the portable fridge. The mountain Dews seem to only be in the meeting rooms the reason for this still ponders my mind. Probably over the two week period, I must have had at least one of each type of soda.

The lab was the most interesting part of the building. The lab is restricted to non-employees, so I can’t talk about what goes on inside. The only way to get into the lab is to swipe your id badge; you must have special access to go into the labs. What I can say is that there are at least 50 computers in each lab and there 22 labs in the building. These computers are used to test the brew application for the new phones coming out in the market. For the beginning of the week, we used a high speed camera to measure the speed of a competitor's applications. We would complete these tests in the lab because it was the only location with enough room for the camera.

Immersion!!!

1. What are you most excited about in regards to your immersion experience? Why do you feel this way?

I am excited for the feeling of being an actual office worker at Qualcomm. Working with Qualcomm will give me many skills as an intern and as a fellow co-worker to these employees.

2. What are you most concerned about (what causes the most stress) regarding immersion? Why do you feel this way?

I am concerned about the photo essay, while also working on my project for my mentor. My project is a PowerPoint presentation, and I am thinking that this will take up a lot of time.

Charles Darwin

1. What is our responsibility do we have for the understanding of science?
The word Science comes from the latin word "scientia", which stands for knowledge. As humans, we are given the amazing abilities of curiosity and questioning and we need to use them to there greatest potential. By being curious we are able to question what we see. By queationing, we have been able to discover theories that we would have never believed. The first person to use question to its full potential was Socrates and thats why we do Socratic Seminars, which include questioning others on there information. Darwin was able to discover natural selection by questioning our Earth and it's creatures. So next time your curious about something, question it.

2. What role should scientific inquiry and scientific knowledge play in our own society?

In our society, the role of scientific inquiry should be used to come up with a way where we can learn to wonder and develop technology that is useful to our current situation of depression rather than creating things we don't need and barely use. If we want to get to the top without later failing, we have to think about the most beneficial substance or thing that we can all count on as a society-not just individually.

I would like to discuss to you about some steps we could follow to help the economic crisis that is affecting our nation. Just as the Depression created many unemployed workers we cannot let that happen to our nation today. From past economic failures, I have noticed that FDR's New Deal helped create jobs and took control of many factors of our culture. We should try to use ideas from his New deal and as FDR said,"wage a war against the emergency". We should also create colleges to help more people earn a degree. If that is no possible, we could give more money to community colleges to create a better learning environment for our generation. This would help create some jobs for the many unemployed as faculty. If we are not able to fulfill the Americans demands right away, we should create the necessary image to fool these Americans into what they demand is actually happening. In your article “The Action Americans Need", you said "We can act boldly to turn crisis into opportunity and, together, write the next great chapter in our history and meet the test of our time" You gave people hope by including them in your so-called quest to defeat this crisis. I hope you take my ideas into consideration for your next plan.

My First Day At Internship

What happened today?????
When I got there, I had lunch with Gary Osumi and he gave us some backround information about Qualcomm. Then we got our badges. After that I met my mentor and she showed me around the offices. I logged into my computer and set up my information. After that, I left and walked to my car and went home.

Barrack Delano Obama

Obama tries to follow steps simialr to FDR's New Deal, to solve the economic crisis of today; but he should also learn from FDR's failures. As with most Presidents, both Obama and FDR asked for more power to help fix the Great Depression and the economic crisis.

Obama's stimulus package is said to help "create jobs and to get people working and to get the economy moving again." This is very similar to FDR's New Deal because it also helped create jobs using the WPA (Workers Progress Administration). But the New Deal was created as a long run project while 75% of the stimulus package's $825 billion will be spent in the first 18 months. Also, The New deal affected all aspects of our nation, while the Stimulus Package will create for our 7.2% unemployed Americans.

Even though FDR's new deal was a big step to help our nation, he was a very cautious man. Many time, he vetoed a bill until it suited his ideas. Obama, on the other, is a spontaneous man. only 2 days after he became President, he created this huge package that he thinks will fix our problems by giving us more debt so that we can get rid of all the debt.
